Meghalaya: Use of plastic carry bags banned in South West Garo Hills

The District Magistrate of South West Garo Hills, Ramakrishna Chitturi, has prohibited the use of plastic carry bags, plastic films, etc., with a thickness of fewer than 50 microns with immediate effect.

The order was issued to curb the proliferation of plastic wastes in all marketplaces, including picnic spots and tourist destinations.

"If anyone is found violating the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, he/she shall be penalised under Section 15 of the Environment Protection Act (EPA) 1986," the order read.

The punishment includes imprisonment for a term that may extend to five years or with a fine that may extend to one lakh rupees or both.
