Meghalaya: Trash trove discovered after impromptu cleaning drive in Williamnagar

WILLIAMNAGAR

An impromptu cleaning drive led by East Garo Hills (EGH) Deputy Commissioner Swapnil Tembe, resulted in vast amounts of trash collected by residents who took part in the initiative.

The two areas (WDSA ground and the Rongrenggre playground) have been a big draw for revellers during the Christmas and New Year season, and an enormous amount of rubbish, including plastic bottles, were left at the two sites.

“The thought was to clean the entire Williamnagar with a focus on Rongrenggre and the WDSA playground. These two areas have been dirty, especially since after the holiday season,” Tembe said.

They organised the drive on January 16 with hundreds of residents, young and old, being a part of the much-needed impetus to clean the town.

According to the DC, an enormous amount of plastic bottles, cigarette butts, cigarette packets and alcohol bottles were found. The WDSA is an important ground for sportspersons of the region, while the Rongrenggre playground lies beside one of the oldest schools in the town.

“People complain that there are no dustbins, but even in developed countries, there are no dustbins. People just don’t throw trash until they find one. The mindset to cleanliness has to change,” the DC said.

Tembe also asked people not to burn leaves as nature would take its time to turn the leaves into manure and suggested that collect plastic garbage and wait for the municipality to take these away.
