Meghalaya: The politics of construction in South Garo Hills

TURA:

The Garo Student’s Union of Karukol under South Garo Hills (SGH) along with Nokmas and residents have expressed resentment after a contractor of a Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) road reused abutments meant for a timber bridge into a Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) road.

The road in question is the upcoming PMGSY road between Karukol to Tolegre in the district.

In a complaint submitted today to the executive engineer of PWD, SGH, the NGO expressed surprise and anger after discovering that abutments that were already there for a timber bridge that ran through the road, were once again being used to construct an RCC one.

“As per our knowledge, the foundation using the same abutments of the earlier timber bridge is not sufficient and dangerous. The abutments per se may not be in the original estimates but are still being constructed by the contractor. As a community, we are worried and seek an investigation into the matter,” President of Karukol GSU unit, AZ Matrsram N Marak said.

The NGO has now asked the PWD department to re-estimate all such RCC bridges on the same road urgently.
