NEW DELHI | SEPT 10, 2020:

The Meghalaya State Piggery Mission was launched by Minister of State for Agriculture, Kailash Choudhary in the presence of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, in New Delhi on September 10.

This Rs 200 crore project is being funded by the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC).

The cheque of the 1st instalment of ₹52.36 Cr for the project was also handed over to the Meghalaya CM by the MoS during the launch programme.

"The Meghalaya State Piggery Mission, supported by the NCDC, will enable our State to achieve self-sufficiency in pork production, reduce our out-of-state import burden by nearly Rs. 150 Crores annually and improve the incomes of over 25,000 households, totalling to an annual increment of Rs. 70 Crores across the state," Sangma said.

He said, by extending Rs. 200 crores as low-interest loans, the Piggery Mission will create and augment over 20,000 enterprises in the piggery sector.

"With interventions across the value chain, the Mission will provide a holistic overhaul of the sector. It will also open up more opportunities for export and food processing in the state," Sangma added.

The Chief Minister also informed about the Meghalaya Government's vision to catapult Meghalaya into the top ten Indian States in terms of Per Capita Income by 2030 with special focus on Human Development, Primary Sector Rejuvenation, Infrastructure Expansion, Entrepreneurship Promotion, Environmental Protection and Governance Reform.

It may be mentioned that last month, the CM had launched the 'RESTART MEGHALAYA MISSION' which comprises a series of programs to support our farmers, and entrepreneurs and to build growth-promoting basic infrastructure and services.

"We are calling this mission RESTART because we want to revive and give a push to the different development activities that were brought to a standstill by COVID," Sangma said.
