Teachers under the banner of the All Garo Hills SSA School Teachers’ Association (AGHSSASTA) on Thursday held a sit-in demonstration at Tura, West Garo Hills (WGH) in protest against the non-release of their five months pending salaries by the Meghalaya government.
The teachers, after the protest, submitted a reminder petition on their demands to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma through the WGH deputy commissioner’s office.
The teachers, through their reminder petition, expressed their sadness over their plight and how they have been struggling to make ends meet.
“While other states have received salaries, teachers in Meghalaya have to build the nation on empty stomachs,” they said.
Further, the teachers added that if the situation continued, enrolment in Sarva Shiksha School (SSA) schools would drop, which could lead to schools being closed down due to lack of students.
They further reiterated their demand for the release of their five months salaries at once, which they asked to be paid before Christmas.
