SHILLONG:

Along with the rest of the country, Meghalaya on Saturday rolled out the COVID-19 vaccination drive with over 800 health workers across the state set to be vaccinated in the first phase.

In Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma launched the vaccination drive at North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Shillong.

The world's biggest COVID-19 vaccination drive was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi via video conferencing on Saturday morning.

It was informed that a total of 100 health workers will be vaccinated at NEIGRIHMS and 732 in the different districts of Meghalaya.

Speaking to media persons, the chief minister termed the occasion as a "historic" moment in the battle against COVID-19.

"This vaccine rollout is a positive step towards the fight against this virus which has long been affecting normal life," Sangma said.

He informed that vaccination will be rolled out in two districts -- South West Khasi Hills and South Garo Hills, which were previously left out due to connectivity issue, by Sunday.

The roll-out of the vaccination drive does not mean the end of the fight against COVID-19, said the chief minister while asserting that the drive may continue for the next six to eight months.
