Meghalaya | “Repetitive” issues raised in Assembly: Power Minister

Meghalaya Power Minister James P.K Sangma, on Thursday, criticised the Opposition for bringing up repetitive issues in the Assembly rather than focussing on other “important” matters.

“The assembly has seen a lot of engagement of the Opposition particularly focused on the Power Department whereas, I think, there are many issues which could have been brought to the Assembly for constructive discussions,” Sangma told reporters.

The Power Minister said the Opposition did not seize the opportunity of having a budget session as they had ample time to bring up other issues.

“Unfortunately, they have been very repetitive in their issues,” he added.

Discussions on the power and financial mess in the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) dominated the proceedings of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly during the ongoing budget session.

Recently, Opposition leader Mukul Sangma had stated that the only solution to the current mess in MeECL was by “throwing out the Chief Minister and Power Minister.”

Countering the statement, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma blamed the then Congress government for the current mess in MeECL.

He said that the genesis of the problem dates back to 2007 when the then government signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the National Thermal Power Corporation of India (NTPC), which he termed a “lopsided agreement.”
