Meghalaya receives Rs 12.5 crore for completion of GSWSS phase III project

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, on Thursday, told the Assembly that the Centre had sanctioned Rs 12.5 crore to the State Government for the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS) phase III project.

The statement was in response to Congress MLA M. Ampareen Lyngdoh's question on whether the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) funding would be diverted for the completion of the project.

The Chief Minister stated that the project was also funded under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

Earlier, while replying to a query raised by Mawlai MLA P.T Sawkmie on the amount invested by the State, as per its share, on the project, PHE Minister Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar said that in the last ten years, the State had invested 10 per cent of the total cost.

Tongkhar said the Chief Minister had recently earmarked Rs 25 crore for completing the project, but the same was not enough.

"An additional fund of Rs 65.57 crore is still required. We got Rs 12.5 crore and, we are still waiting for the remaining," Tongkhar said.

Tongkhar said that 72 per cent of the work on the GWSS Phase III is completed.

He assured that the department intends to celebrate its completion along with the 50th Statehood celebrations.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister said that the state had received the first instalment of Rs 100 crore under the special assistance for capital expenditure from the Centre for projects which are nearing completion.
