NONGPOH:

Members of the Ri Bhoi District Congress Committee (RBDCC), on Wednesday, submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi seeking her intervention on the illegal intrusion of the Assam Government at Khanapara under Raid Marwet.

Expressing his discontentment, RBDCC president Mayral Born Syiem said, “RBDCC is shocked to learn that the state government is still mute and has taken no steps concerning the illegal encroachment by Assam in Meghalaya soil by constructing illegal structures. Only the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council had served the notice to Chief Secretary of Assam asking to halt the construction.”

"RBDCC urges the district administration to immediately take the matter up with the state government," he said.

“It is alarming that the government of Assam has once again tried to exert its illegal dominance on our state’s property through illegal construction of the Transit Camp,” he added.

Syiem also stated that the Congress party condemned the act which they termed as a series of untiring attempts by the Assam government to demean the state of Meghalaya.

RBDCC members also took stock of the entry checkpoint-cum-facilitation centre at Umling on implementing the Meghalaya Residents Safety & Security Act, 2016.

The committee had advised that translation of the act into Khasi vernacular would help the residents and representatives of the villages in the state.

"RBDCC also requested the state government to follow up the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Amendment Bill, 2019, so that the Governor can give his assent for implementing this act," Syiem said.
