Meghalaya: Radiation levels at Nongbah Jynrin within safety levels

The state government had earlier requested the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) to assist a third party investigation in connection with the alleged radiation hazard at Nongbah Jynrin in South West Khasi Hills (SWKH) district to find out the levels of radiation from the area.

A six-member team led by Prof. B. Myrboh, Department of Chemistry, NEHU visited the site on November 10 last year.

The state government received a report from the NEHU Expert Committee on December 17. During an interactive session held on January 20 under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, conclusive analysis was made on the findings.

According to the report by the NEHU Expert Committee, the radiation levels at the source (tanks and pits) including villages and nearby habitations, are well within safety levels.

The Committee also found that the levels of radiation are higher in the rivulet Phud Syngkai. The area is approximately 100 feet away from the source and requires further examination.

Besides this, the state government decided it would undertake a separate study on the rocks and sediments of the stream Phud Syngkai to determine the cause and severity of the radiation.
