SHILLONG:

The Meghalaya Confederation for Academic Welfare (MeCAW), on Thursday, held a protest march at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) to demand the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor.

MeCAW is a body comprising civil society groups, teacher associations, student associations including academicians and stakeholders who share a mutual concern regarding the development in NEHU.

“We are holding this protest to impress on the need to appoint a new VC at NEHU besides other demands,” MeCAW convener, Roy Kupar Synrem said.

The organisation also demanded a local and qualified professor from NEHU to be appointed as the next VC and to not extend the term of the present VC.

Meanwhile, MeCAW stated that there were financial irregularities during the term of the present VC and demanded a formal inquiry into the matter.
