Meghalaya | MeECL going through transitional stage: James Sangma

Amid criticisms from several quarters, Power Minister James P.K Sangma, on Thursday, said that the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) is going through a stage of transition.

“There are many interventions that are being put in place. It is going to upset the system that is in place right now, and we understand this is sort of (a) disruption. There may be allegations, but as long as they are not substantiated with proof, these are all allegations which do not have any base,” Sangma told reporters.

“As a government, we are trying to bring in positive changes to the MeECL,” he said, adding that the improvements are already trickling and showing the desired results.

“And we believe that very soon, people will see the positive changes in the MeECL. People will understand that these steps were needed to be taken, and these allegations are again baseless and unsubstantiated,” he asserted.

On being asked about the predicament Meghalaya is in following the power regulation notice served by NEEPCO recently, the Power Minister said, “We are trying to resolve the matter, and we are confident that we will resolve it.”

Earlier today, Thma U Rangli-Juki (TUR), a Meghalaya-based social organisation, demanded a CBI inquiry into the “financial crisis” in the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL).

The organisation is also demanding the resignation of the Power Minister over the prevailing mess in the MeECL.

In a press release issued on Thursday, TUR accused the Sangma of “presiding over Meghalaya’s biggest instance of financial irregularity.”
