Meghalaya political leaders condole demise of MLA David Nongrum

Political leaders cutting across political parties on Tuesday condoled the sudden demise of Congress MLA from Mawryngkneng, David Arnold Nongrum.

"Extremely saddened by the sudden demise of Sh. David Nongrum, Hon'ble MLA from Meghalaya. He was a young, dynamic and vocal leader who executed an impactful tenure. My heartfelt condolences to the family in this hour of grief. May his soul rest in peace," Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma tweeted.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has also expressed grief and shock over the demise of Nongrum. "This is the saddest moment for me. On behalf of the MDA government, I express my deepest condolences to his wife, children, mother, father, relatives and especially the people of his constituency."

The Meghalaya Congress Legislator Party (CLP) on Tuesday held a condolence meeting at the official residence of Leader of Opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma to condole the sudden demise of party MLA from Mawryngkneng, David Arnold Nongrum.

Sangma expressed his 'deepest' shock over the untimely demise of his party colleague David Nongrum on Tuesday morning.

“I am shattered and deeply grieved with the untimely demise of David Nongrum,” Sangma said.

The Opposition leader fondly remembers Nongrum's contribution as a legislator and said they cannot be quantified.

Sangma said that he had known Nongrum as a 'passionate and committed leader' who had a long way to go.

East Shillong MLA, Ampareen Lyngdoh, said that the Mawryngkneng legislator was a “simple man, approachable and fiery”.

Lyngdoh also said that Nongrum was willing to forget his own needs and requirements.

The state has lost a young leader who could have done many things, she added.

Similarly, Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem said that the demise of Nongrum was a tremendous loss not only to the Congress but also the state and the constituency he represented.

Nongrum passed away at the age of 42, after suffering a cardiac arrest on Tuesday morning. The son of former Meghalaya Assembly speaker and senior Congress leader Charles Pyngrope, Nongrum was first elected as an Independent MLA from Mawryngkneng in 2013. In 2018, he retained his seat as an MLA on a Congress ticket.
