Meghalaya: Picnic spot along Umiam river to be closed for one month

The Dorbar Shnong of Umiam village under Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya has decided to close the picnic spot which is along the Umiam river locally known as Khri for one month so that the village authority along with the local volunteers can aid in cleaning the river bank.

Speaking to TNT-The Northeast Today, Twinkle Buhphang informed that, the Dorbar Shnong recently met and discussed the situation of the once beautiful Umiam river which is under grave threat because of the irresponsibility of picnic revellers who while sightseeing to the river site would litter garbage.

“The tourist spots along the Umiam river which is under the jurisdiction of the Dorbar Shnong which has attracted many visitors and picnickers and the authority concerned will take more initiative by introducing boating, small huts and many more for attraction,” Buhphang stated.

The Dorbar Shnong has also called for banning of explosion and netting in Umiam rivers as a mark to preserve aquatic life which is available in the river.

Factories in and around Umiam areas are warned not to litter their waste into the river and if anyone is found violating the order they would face legal action.
