Over 40 children from AW Thomas Girls’ Orphanage at Jaiaw Lumsyntiew in Shillong, Meghalaya tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday.

Some helpers including the warden of the orphanage are among the persons who have tested positive for the virus.

When contacted, Rangbah Shnong (Headman) and chairman of Dorbar Shnong Jaiaw Laitdom Community COVID Management team, SB Kharbangar told TNT-The Northeast Today that the area has been declared a micro-containment zone.

Kharbangar informed that prior to this, two children from the Home aged 14 and 16 years had tested positive for COVID-19.

“It was only after their results came out that testing of the other children and helpers of the orphanage was made mandatory,” said the Rangbah Shnong.

“Unfortunately, almost all the occupants of the orphanage contracted the virus,” Kharbangar said, adding that they are yet to find out from where the two children got the virus.

The age of these children are between 7 to 18 years.
