Meghalaya observes death anniversary of freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah

Meghalaya on Dec 30 observed the 158th death anniversary of legendary freedom fighter from Jaintia Hills, U Kiang Nangbah.

Several programmes were organised by different organisations across the Khasi and Jaintia Hills. In Shillong, the Dorbar Khatso kni Seij Raij Niam tre Shillong, an indigenous religious organisation organised a programme at U kiang Nangbah Park to mark this day.

The event was attended by the members of the organisation along with the devotees. In his speech, senior member M. Belbin Kyndiah shared some light on the oral history of U kiang Nangbah.

U Kiang Nangbah was a freedom fighter who challenged the invasion of the British during the 1st war of Indian independence in 1857. It was said that U Kiang Nangbah had gathered the local people on the banks of the river Syntu Ksiar to motivate the people of the Hills to stand up against the might of the British. He was arrested on Dec 27 1862 and was hanged after a mock trial on December 30, 1862.

Similarly, to commemorate this day, the National People’s Youth Front, Meghalaya hosted an award ceremony to felicitate three prominent citizens and a Society at Jowai in West Jaintia Hills district.

This day was also observed by several students’ organisations of the state.
