North Garo Hills district police busted a motorcycle theft gang while recovering 12 stolen motorcycles on January 11.

The operation also led to the arrest of four individuals.

“The operation was ongoing for a week and we could recover 13 stolen bikes that were sold to unsuspecting residents of Meghalaya. We have arrested 4 suspected agents of the gang,” said Superintendent of Police, North Garo Hills, Abraham Sangma.

“The motorcycles were stolen from various parts of Assam and then sold in Meghalaya,”, added the SP.

The modus operandi of the group was to steal the motorcycles from various places from Assam before the engine and chassis numbers were tampered with and brought to Mendipathar, where various agents would contact customers who needed to buy a secondhand motorcycle.

According to sources, documents to prove ownership were then forged before the bikes were sold to customers, who were completely unaware that the motorcycles were stolen.

A case has been registered at the Mendipathar Police Station with the police also finding forged documents created by the gang to intentionally deceive unsuspecting customers in Meghalaya.

The district police have also issued an advisory on the matter and appealed to all residents to properly verify whenever they buy any second hand or used motorcycles/vehicles from any individual/agent or from any online platforms.
