Meghalaya | Nongalbibra accident: 7-year-old succumbs to injuries; death toll rises to six

Another victim of the road traffic accident in Nongalbibra village of South Garo Hils, Meghalaya, 7-year-old Aryan Sangma breathed his last after battling through his injuries for the past 5 days in a hospital in Guwahati, Assam, raising the death toll to six.

Aryan, as per family sources, succumbed to his injuries at about 6 am on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the injured persons are reportedly recovering and are undergoing treatment in Tura (West Garo Hills), Williamnagar (East Garo Hills) and Nongalbibra.

On Jan 12 at about 11:30 pm, a semi-truck driven by one Badal Lama rammed into a parked truck at high speed killing four people on the spot while another lost his life upon reaching the Civil Hospital in Williamnagar on the same day.

Three of the injured were rushed to Guwahati in Assam by former Rongara – Siju MLA, Rophul Marak. Of the three taken to Guwahati, Aryan was worst hit among the survivors and underwent an operation on Jan 13. However, he failed to regain consciousness even four days after the operation and lost his life on Sunday morning. His mother was amongst the victims who died on the spot.

The driver, Badal Lama is said to be recovering from the accident and is conscious. Sengchi Sangma (15), who was also critical when she was brought to Guwahati, is responding to treatment, raising hope that she will get better. Sengchi’s mother too was a casualty in the accident.

The death of Aryan has raised the death toll to six, with at least 11 people confirmed to be travelling in the ill-fated semi-truck. The dead includes three children and an equal number of women.

Aryan’s body is expected to be brought to Nongalbibra on Monday for the final rites.

Rophul, along with more well-wishers from Garo Hills, had run a campaign for financial aid which received a huge response. The well-wishers have been continuing the efforts to collect enough money to pay the hospital bills of the two children and the driver in Guwahati.

“We are extremely saddened to hear of the demise of Aryan. We had been hoping and praying he would return home. We will continue our efforts to ensure Sengchi at least returns to our midst and continue with the same hope,” said a well-wisher John D Sangma.
