The Dolloi (traditional head) of Nartiang Elaka (province), who had been absconding for a month after being accused of raping a woman, was found hanging in a forest at Pdein Mukhim, between Wahiahjer and Mupliang village of West Jaintia Hills (WJH) District of Meghalaya.

The accused, identified as Hepsing Dhar and resident of Nartiang Village, was accused of raping a woman on 30 November 2020 and, an FIR was registered at Jowai Police Station.

Since then, the accused had been absconding and despite a massive manhunt being launched, he remained untraceable.

It was only on the forenoon of January 3, 2021, that some villagers had reported seeing a dead body hanging from a tree in a forest of Pdein Chnong, adjacent to Wahiajer Village.

Upon investigation by a team from the Crime Scene Unit (CSU) of WJH police in the presence of magistrates, the deceased was identified as Hepsing Dhar.

The WJH Superintendent of Police, Bikram D Marak said that prima facie revealed to be a case of suicide by hanging, however, facts can only be ascertained after the post mortem by the doctors concerned and, the body of the accused will be handed over to the family after investigation.
