Meghalaya: NABARD launches first ‘Tribal Development Fund’ project in SWKH

The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) formally launched the first Tribal Development Fund (TDF) project during a programme at Shngimawlein village under Mawkyrwat Block in South West Khasi Hills (SWKH) on Thursday.

The TDF, funded by NABARD and North East India Committee On Relief and Development (NEICORD), will be implemented in seven villages in Mawkyrwat Block.

The programme was attended by SWKH Deputy Commissioner C Kharkongor, Mawkyrwat Block Development Officer F Basan, Assistant Director of Horticulture R Marak, Mawkyrwat Border Area Development Officer Avin Wanbah, District Development Manager Utpal Bezbaruah, Executive Director of NEICORD Guithuilung Daimei and others.

While addressing the gathering, District Development Manager Utpal Bezbaruah said that the project aims to promote sustainable livelihood activities and economic upliftment through sustainable agriculture and social empowerment in tribal areas of the country.

He informed that 200 families from seven villages would benefit from the project as it will provide support in the plantation of four crops, namely kiwi, peach, passion fruit and ginger.

“The project will provide various training on plantations, community health awareness programmes, skill training in the non-farm sector, exposure visits etc.,” he added.

Meanwhile, SWKH Deputy Commissioner C Kharkongor lauded NABARD and NEICORD for the successful launch of the project.
