TURA:

A 13-year-old boy who had gone on a trip with his friends to Dinggok village in North Garo Hills (NGH), Meghalaya, lost his life after an altercation with a group of boys and villagers on March 4.

The incident, which sparked outrage in local circles, took place around 6:00 pm.

According to reports, the victim and his friends had gone to the village to visit his father.

While they were waiting, the boys struck up a conversation with some girls and this led to an altercation with some of the local boys.

“Some local village boys did not like their talking to the girls, and an argument turned into a full-fledged altercation. Later some villagers came out to support the assaulters, and they severely beat the boys. The victim succumbed to his injuries on the same night,” confirmed superintendent of police, NGH, Abraham T Sangma.

Immediately after the incident, the assaulters, including some senior villagers, fled the scene.

“We have issued a lookout notice for them, and an investigation into the incident is currently on. We are doing our best to catch the suspects,” said the SP.

Earlier this year, a group of villagers from Tapa Darengchi under Mendipathar PS in the same district were involved in assaulting a person in a case of mistaken identity.

When the person was rescued by the police personnel, the villagers attacked and destroyed parts of the police station. Police arrested many villagers following the incident.
