Chairperson of the Meghalaya Lokayukta, PK Musahary, through an order on November 9, has asked for a charge sheet to be filed against the BDOs of Demdema and Selsella C&RD Blocks, West Garo Hills along with other officers named by the complainants.
Silman Momin appealed that his name should be removed from the list over the fact that he was no longer an employee of the block office and only worked as an assistant accounts officer.
However, Silman said that the accounts officer under whom he worked, was not named.
Earlier various complainants from the Selsella and Demdema C&RD Blocks had approached the Lokayukta over allegations of corruption, embezzlement of funds and non-payment to job cardholders
The complaints were filed by Sanowara Begum, Abdul Mozid Sk, Nur Islam against the BDO of Demdema, PR Sangma, BDO of Selsella, Jude Rangku Sangma and Silman Momin.
Following the complaint, an investigation had been ordered by the Lokayukta seeking details of what transpired.
The report of the investigation when submitted pointed to over ₹ 1.11 crore of funds being embezzled, in the name of dual job cardholders.
“I have gone through the preliminary report which contains at least 11 allegations like embezzlement of public funds, misappropriation, non-payment of salary of card holders, payments made to bogus card holders. These are criminal and attributable to corruption,” said the order by the chairperson.
The respondents (BDOs) demanded a further inquiry, stating that nothing could be done, based on the preliminary inquiry.
The chairperson, however, argued that, through the preliminary investigation, there was prima facie enough for a case to be filed.
“In view of the above, it is decided that this case be recommended for initiation of prosecution of the indicted persons. The prosecution wing shall prepare and file a charge-sheet before the appropriate Court in accordance with law within 4 weeks,” said the order.
The matter is due to be heard on December 7 next.
