Meghalaya: Investigation will compel govt to come clean on corruption charges, says Mukul

SHILLONG:

Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma on Thursday said that the National People’s Party (NPP) led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) Government can come out clean on the allegations of corruption only if there is an investigation.

“It is only by going for an investigation that any government can come out clean to allegations of corruption. An investigation is the only answer to respond to any allegation,” Sangma stated while talking to reporters here.

He further stated that they should investigate the alleged corruption in such a manner that the people in authority cannot tamper.

The BJP, an ally in the MDA Government, and the Opposition Congress had been criticising the Government on the alleged corruption in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) and the alleged illegal mining and transportation of coal.

Mukul on Mawryngkeng by-poll election

Meanwhile, the Leader of Opposition informed that the Congress is still looking for a suitable candidate for the Mawryngkneng bye-election.

“We are hopeful to get a suitable candidate for the bye-election. As of now, discussions and consultations are still on,” he said.

It may be mentioned that the family of former Assembly Speaker and father of Mawryngkneng MLA, late David Arnold Nongrum, Charles Pyngrope had decided that none of his family members would contest the bye-election.

Sangma admitted that the party would have an advantage if someone from the family of late Nongrum contest the election.

“Obviously yes, because we are dealing with human minds. So it is a mind game at the end of the day,” he said.

Meanwhile, a senior Congress leader said that it was a tough job trying to decide on the candidates for the GHADC polls.
