The Garo Students’ Union (GSU), South Zone has written to the Deputy Commissioner seeking the induction of a full-fledged District Transport Officer (DTO) for the district.
The NGO also questioned the continued increase in transport fares despite the COVID situation normalising in the state.
Chuang Hauser Sangma, South Zone president, said, “There have been many complaints by people on the style of functioning of the DTO office. The DTO is unavailable even during normal working days, and even the staff are neglecting their duties. It has also been found out that even the computers required for normal functioning are old or non-functional.”
According to sources, the DTO of West Garo Hills (WGH) has also been given the charge of handling South Garo Hills (SGH). This comes that there are officers who are eligible for promotion to the role but have been denied promotion.
Further on the question of transport hike, the GSU questioned why transport charges were still increasing when the situation in the state has become more or less normal.
“The prices still continue to be post the start of the lockdown and transporters are exploiting the people by increasing the hike in fares. The continued increase in transportation charge is condemnable, and authorities responsible should act on the matter at the earliest,” said Chuang.
