Meghalaya govt to enhance road connectivity across state, says CM

SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said that the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government has implemented various central schemes to improve road connectivity across the state.

"In the last three years, a great amount of expenditure has been made to develop road connectivity throughout the state. Be it national highways, PMGSY, RIDF or even at the State development schemes," Sangma said.

"There are more than 500 road projects under PMGSY(Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana) that are being implemented across the state currently, the same projects which the earlier government ignored and failed to complete on time," Sangma said.

"We have finally taken up many important state roads that have been left unattended for more than 30 to 50 years in different places," the Chief Minister added.

He further informed that the government is working to reduce the distance between Nongstoin to Maweit in West Khasi Hills, which otherwise take three and a half hours.

He also said that the oldest road in Garo Hills, (Rongram-Dadeng-Phulbari road) which was neglected for the last 40-50 years, will soon be repaired.

"We have managed to sanction Rs 145 crore for the reconstruction of this important road. The work will be allotted in 10 days. This important hill road which connected around four constituencies will finally be taken up," he said.

Sangma also said that the MDA Government is taking various measures to boost the tourism sector.

"We have recently received an externally aided project from the new development bank worth Rs 730 crore for development of tourism infrastructure," he said.
