Meghalaya Govt puts in place model code of conduct ahead of GHADC polls

In view of the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections, the District Election Officer of West Garo Hills informed that giving or taking cash during the election process is a punishable offence under section 171 B of the Indian Penal Code.

Any person found giving or accepting cash is liable to be punished with imprisonment up to one year or with a fine or both, stated a release from the Election Office.

According to 171 C of the Indian Penal Code, no person is allowed to exercise power or pose any threat to the elector or any other person during the elections. Individuals found involved in such acts will be punished as per the law, the release stated.

In pursuance of specific instructions from the District Council Affairs Department, carrying cash of Rs 50,000 and above in any constituency during the electioneering exercise without proper explanation on the source and end-use is strictly prohibited.
