SHILLONG:

Police are yet to make any arrests in connection with the recent assault of two youths at Golflinks in Shillong, Meghalaya.

According to an official press release on Friday, “Information was received around 10:45 pm on March 21 from 108 that two boys sustained grievous injuries at the Golflinks area.”

“Immediately, a team from Pasteur Beat house rushed to the spot and found two boys lying unconscious at the Golf Course near the forested area. They were immediately shifted to an ambulance for medical help with the help of the police team along with the friends and family members of the victims,” stated the press release.

During the preliminary investigation, police took the statements of eyewitnesses who revealed that the victims were playing football at Golflinks on March 21 around 5:00 pm.

“After the game, they stayed back and consumed liquor,” police said, adding that later in the evening, more people arrived at the same area to indulge in similar activities.

“They (victims) first got into an altercation with one such group, but eventually, they compromised and began revelling together. The loud noise emanating from their group irked a third party in the vicinity, who then reacted by pelting beer bottles at the group,” police said.

Eyewitnesses stated that the members of the third party belonged to a tribal community as per their language and accent.

“Thereafter, the eyewitnesses fled from the area. After an interval, they came back to look for their friends and found the victims lying unconscious with a crowd gathered around them,” police stated.

However, police are yet to find out the identity of the assailants.

The father of one victim formally submitted a complaint at Pasteur Beat house on March 25. The case was registered under Sadar Police Station.

“We have established no communal angle to the case of assault in the investigation so far. Both the injured persons are still under treatment and hence, have provided no statement. A sustained effort is being made to identify and arrest the culprits,” police said.
