Meghalaya: Garo Students’ Union condemns Deputy CM's statement on GHADC

TURA:

The Garo Students’ Union (GSU), West Khasi Hills (WKH) zone has condemned the statement made by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong in which he said that the AD rules in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) allowed for non-tribals to contest and vote.

“The minister should know that the GHADC is only for Garos, as has been provided under the Sixth Schedule. Even the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) have been granted autonomies. We are saddened to hear such statements coming from the Deputy CM as he is an indigenous tribal of the state,” said general secretary, Fremiush D Sangma.

The pressure group felt that instead of making such statements, the deputy CM should advise or guide the GHADC on how to frame rules and regulations as has been done in the KHADC and JHADC so that even the GHADC will have laws to prevent non-tribals from voting and contesting in the elections.

The GSU asserted that it has become difficult to trust the MDA government led by the National People’s Party (NPP) as the deputy CM himself is not fighting for tribal rights.

“We denounce the statement and will not allow the participation of non-tribals in GHADC. We will not be spectators and watch our rights being manipulated by others,” added Sangma.
