D.N Joshi, a former member of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and veteran politician, passed away on Monday at the age of 98.
Joshi joined politics in 1972 and was elected as a member of the State Legislative Assembly from Mawprem Constituency (now South Shillong and North Shillong) on a Congress ticket.
He was an MLA for 31 years as he remained in office for six terms.
During his tenure, he held several posts in the state government as chairman of different boards and as a member of different committees in the Meghalaya Assembly.
He was also the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Chief Whip of his party.
Born on November 14, 1922, he started his career as a teacher and later became a headmaster.
He also took active interests in social activities and was the founder secretary of the Assam Gorkha league and the president of the same organisation between 1952-1955.
He was involved with the development of several educational and social institutions in Meghalaya and was associated with the established college for higher education known as Buddha Bhanu Sarswati Mahavidyalaya (BBS College).
Expressing grief over the demise of Joshi, Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma wrote, "Saddened to learn about the demise of six-time MLA, Shri D. N Joshi Ji. He dedicated his entire life in the service of the State & committed towards the development of educational institutions. He also worked extensively for the welfare of the Gorkha community in Meghalaya."
