Meghalaya: Five killed after being hit by truck at Shillong by-pass bridge

Five people lost their lives after being hit by a truck at Shillong by-pass bridge, Umkhen-Thangshalai in East Khasi Hills (EKH) district of Meghalaya, on October 17 morning.

The deceased were roadside vendors and they all hail from Thangshalai village under Mawryngkneng Community and Rural Development Block.

According to the police, a bamboo-loaded truck (UP 51AT 2949), while proceeding from Mawryngkneng towards Guwahati (Assam) via Shillong by-pass, dashed against one dumper-truck (ML 05R 4937) at Umkhen bridge in Thangshalai.

After hitting the dumper, the truck went off the road and hit the five roadside vendors, police said.

"The truck has been intercepted but the driver managed to escape," EKH Superintendent of Police (SP-Crime) Vivek Syiem said.

The deceased have been identified as Balarihun Kharkongor (female-27), Gracefully Nongbri (female-23), Banteibha Bina (female-20), Shantilang Nongbri (female-28) and Korbarsing Kharduid (male-52).

While the four females died on the spot, Korbarsing succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.
