TURA:

A 21-year-old Under-Trial Prisoner (UTP), Johnstar R Sangma on Wednesday was arrested by the police from Tura in West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, six days after he escaped.

On November 26, Sangma had escaped from custody after "pretending" to be unwell following a bout of vomiting. The doctors of Tura District Jail became concerned after his body refused to respond to the treatment being administered to him.

Upon being contacted on the matter, police from Tura rushed to the jail to bring the UTP to Tura Civil Hospital (TCH) for treatment. However, he successfully jumped out of the moving vehicle when it slowed down, just before reaching TCH.

Sangma was in jail for an alleged case of sexual assault in South Garo Hills (SGH).

A lookout notice for Sangma was issued and, information on his whereabouts was sought from the public.

The UTP’s luck ran out on Wednesday afternoon after West Garo Hills (WGH) police received a tip-off on his location.

“An operation was launched to recapture him, and after another chase, we could catch him. All necessary formalities have been observed, and he is back once again in custody. He was caught at about 3:30 pm this afternoon,” confirmed Superintendent of Police, WGH, Dr MGR Kumar.
