Meghalaya: District Court sentences four to 'rigorous' imprisonment

The District and Session Court, West Khasi Hills, Meghalaya convicted several accused and sentenced to imprisonment, in connection with POCSO cases registered in the district.

In the first case, the court sentenced one Hodring Kharsyntiew to three years imprisonment after he was found guilty of committing an offence under section 7 POCSO Act, 2012 punishable under section 8 of the POCSO Act, with a fine of Rs. 2000, failing which he shall further undergo 15 days simple imprisonment.

In the second case, the District and Session Court convicted an accused person, Shashi Kapoor Basarngaid and sentenced him to seven years imprisonment.

The accused was found guilty of committing an offence under section 3 (a) POCSO Act, 2012, punishable under section 4 of the POCSO Act, with a fine of Rs. 2000, failing which he shall further undergo 15 days simple imprisonment.

The District Court also convicted one Pynwanbor Kharbani and sentenced him to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment.

The accused was found guilty of committing an offence under section 5 (m) (n) of POCSO Act, 2012, punishable under section 6 of the POCSO Act, with a fine of Rs. 20,000, failing which he shall further undergo two months simple imprisonment.

Meanwhile, in an open court, one Aland Sohshang was found guilty of committing an offence under section 3 (a) and section 5 (l) of the POCSO Act, 2012, punishable under section 4 & 6 POCSO Act with a fine of Rs 10,000.

He has been sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. No separate imprisonment will be awarded under section 4 of the POCSO Act as the punishment prescribed under section 6 POCSO Act is greater than the one provided for.

The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was enacted in 2012, and is a special law to protect children from offences of sexual abuse.
