Meghalaya: Conrad Sangma-led delegation meets several ministers in Delhi

A delegation of ministers from Meghalaya led by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday, February 08, met several union ministers in New Delhi to discuss various developmental and infrastructural projects in the state.

Earlier, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, accompanied by Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh met the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Om Birla to apprise him of the ongoing construction of the new Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang in Shillong. They also sought support and cooperation from the Centre for early completion of the new Assembly building.

Later, the delegation of ministers also met Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, who is also Minister In-charge of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Hardeep Singh Puri to discuss issues pertaining to urban housing for the poor and upgradation and activation of the Umroi and Baljek airports in the state, in the presence of officials from the Airport Authority of India.

During the meeting with Puri, the Chief Minister sought financial support from the Government of India for improvement of infrastructure for New Shillong Township including the development of roads and other infrastructure.

Sangma informed that the response from the union minister was positive. “The minister has asked us to work out details and the officials are looking into all the formalities,” the Meghalaya Chief Minister said.

During the meeting with Union Minister incharge Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, the delegation apprised him of the implementation and progress of the “ambitious” Jal Jeevan Mission project in Meghalaya.

The Chief Minister also raised the issue of pending proposals and applications of some minor irrigation schemes. “We have requested the minister to release the funds and to approve the new proposals,” Sangma said.

The issue on the need to clean up the dying rivers of Meghalaya was also discussed during the meeting. The Chief Minister has sought the Ministry's support for the State Government’s proposed initiative to rejuvenate the Umkhrah and Umshyrpi rivers in Shillong.

Sangma informed that the Union Minister spoke in support of the State Government’s plans and instructed officials present in the meeting to ensure that the projects see the light of day.

With relation to the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission, Shekhawat has expressed satisfaction in the way Meghalaya is progressing but wanted more results. “He has given good suggestions and told us that funds will not be an issue and has urged the state government to ensure that the implementation of the mission is done in a very aggressive manner,” the Chief Minister said.

Later, during a meeting with Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju, the Meghalaya delegation apprised him of the ongoing construction of different sports infrastructure in the State.

The Meghalaya Chief Minister has sought the Ministry’s support to organise the proposed ‘North East Youth Festival 2022’ in Shillong, to commemorate the 50th year of Meghalaya’s Statehood.

Sangma informed that the Union Minister has expressed his keen desire to support the Government of Meghalaya in creating sporting infrastructure and has assured all help for hosting of the North East Youth Festival in Shillong.

The delegation also called on Union Minister for Environment and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar. They have sought support and cooperation for various environment-related projects in the State and have apprised him on matters related to eco-sensitive zones of Nokrek, Balpakram and Siju in Garo Hills region.

The delegation comprised of Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Transport Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, Power Minister James Sangma, PHE Minister Brolding Nongsiej and state officials.
