SHILLONG:

The Meghalaya Congress is planning to field former Assembly Speaker Charles Pyngrope's daughter, Belinda Abigail Nongrum for the bye-election to the Mawryngkneng Assembly seat.

The bye-election to the Mawryngkneng Assembly constituency would be necessitated following the sudden demise of sitting Congress legislator, David Arnold Nongrum on February 2 last.

The younger sister of late David Nongrum, Abigail is currently the Law Officer of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

Mawryngkneng Block Congress Committee (MBCC) will soon recommend the name of Pyngrope's daughter to allot the party ticket for the bye-election, sources informed.

The former Assembly Speaker has agreed to the request of the party MLAs, who met him on Monday, with a recommendation to field Abigail for the bye-election.

"The party leaders were unanimous that the candidate of the party should be from the family of Charles Pyngrope, to be able to carry forward the unfinished task of late David Nongrum," informed sources.

It may be mentioned that the ruling National People's Party (NPP) is likely to field sitting Sohryngkham MDC and KHADC chairman, Pyniaid Sing Syiem for the bye-election.
