Meghalaya: Confederation of Ri Bhoi People meet DC over alleged land encroachment by Assam

NONGPOH:

Expressing discontentment over the frequent encroachment by authorities of the Assam government, the members of the Confederation of Ri Bhoi People (CoRP), Ri Bhoi district, on Thursday, met the Deputy Commissioner and sought immediate intervention from her part.

They reported that the fresh encroachment by Assam was the construction of the Transit Camp at Khanapara, Raid Marwet in Ri Bhoi district.

The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Secretary had also written to the Chief Secretary of Assam demanding an immediate halt to the construction project.

The delegation, led by CoRP president Bandari Ryntathiang along with other members, met Deputy Commissioner R.M Kurbah and submitted a memorandum seeking the attention of the district administration.

“It was a grief concern by the organisation to get the information over the frequent encroachment and setting up of illegal construction by Assam government, the matter which concerns is that the Meghalaya government is shying away to take swift action over the encroachment by the Assam government from time to time,” Ryntathiang said.

He also said that the communication sent by the KHADC secretary to the Assam Chief Secretary stressed that they are equipped with evidential documents concerning the land which is being forcibly claimed and encroached on by Assam for constructing the Transit Camp at Khanapara in Ri Bhoi district.

However, the CoRP had sought the immediate intervention of the District Administration so that the construction of the camp is kept in abeyance until the two states decide on further arrangements.
