Meghalaya CM inaugurates and lays foundation for key projects in Garo Hills

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma laid the foundation stone for upgrading the United Kharkutta Government School under the North Garo Hills district on Monday.

The programme was also attended by Kharkutta MLA Rupert Momin and other officials of the district.

Addressing the gathering, Sangma said that the creation of better educational infrastructure will go a long way in giving a better atmosphere for students to avail learning facilities.

Speaking on the commitment of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, the Chief Minister said, “NPP made a commitment to the people during the election and to fulfil the mandate, (the) Government had come up with the 'education Policy’ within six months of taking over the regime of the Government”.

United Kharkutta Government School was established in 1953 by active members of six villages in the area - Kharkutta, Melopara, Tengabari, Salpara, Kholaipara and Kamagandim.

The School was brought under the deficit system in 1959 and provincialised in the year 1981, and upgraded to a higher secondary level in 2002.

Reportedly, the school is in a dilapidated condition with inadequate infrastructure to conduct proper classes.

The Chief Minister also encouraged the people of Kharkutta to take advantage of the village’s proximity with Assam by pursuing different entrepreneurial activities and assured all possible support by the Government to promote business and economic activities in the area.

He also thanked the MLA of Kharkutta, Rupert Momin for approaching the Government to sanction funds for upgrading the school.

The Rs 4 crore-infrastructure up-gradation project is said to be completed by December 2022.

On another occasion, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma also inaugurated the new building of the Omed Memorial Secondary School, in Rajasimla, North Garo Hills.

The school was established on February 17, 1969, in honour of Omed W Momin, the first Garo who converted to Christianity.

He also thanked the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Education Department for collaborating to upgrade educational institutions in Meghalaya under “Supporting Human Capital Development Project”.

​Recalling the work of his late father P. A. Sangma, he said, “A portion of the School was constructed with funds sanctioned from the MP scheme during my late Father, Sh. P A Sangma’s tenure, I am glad to have this opportunity to inaugurate the new school building which has the imprint of such inspiring leadership.”
