Meghalaya CM campaigns for NPP candidates in Garo Hills ahead of GHADC polls

National President of the National People's Party (NPP) and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma is campaigning in the Garo Hills region ahead of the election to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) scheduled to be held on April 8.

Addressing a poll rally at Mangsang under Darugre GHADC constituency on Wednesday, Sangma said people should vote for a party that listens to the people.

"Congress has lost its political ground across India and, they have no political will anymore," he said while urging people to vote for the ruling NPP, citing that the Council cannot function without the support of the State and Centre.

He also informed the gathering that the Centre has accorded a sanction of Rs 700 crore for district councils of Meghalaya, of which GHADC will get around Rs 250 crore for creating development assets for Garo Hills.

Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and NPP leader Timothy D Shira lashed out at the Congress for their "tall promise to reform GHADC".

He said that Congress is an "expert" in lying; "They are not in power in State or Centre; how can they transform GHADC?" he asked.

Meanwhile, at an election rally in Rongjeng, Government Chief Whip and NPP leader Marcuise Marak said that before the NPP regime in the Council, the Congress party has "failed" the GHADC with financial mismanagement.

"NPP has been working to create a transparent financial and management system in the council," he said, adding that NPP is "committed to further strengthen the GHADC".

The NPP leaders also campaigned for Williamnagar candidate Denang T. Sangma; Darugre candidate Henen R Sangma at Mangsang; and Darugre candidate at Rongjeng in East Garo Hills.
