Meghalaya Cabinet announces date for GHADC elections

The Meghalaya Cabinet, on Thursday, announced that the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections would be on April 9, 2021.

The date of counting will be held on April 14.

During a briefing, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that the publication of draft electoral roll would be on February 4.

The last date for filing claims and objections will be on February 18, and the disposal of claims and objections will be on March 1.

The date for calling the constituencies to elect their representatives will be on March 8, following which the model code of conduct would be enforced in the entire jurisdiction of the Garo Hills District Council.

The last date of filing nominations will be on March 15. The last date of scrutiny of nomination papers will be on March 15 and withdrawal will be on March 19.

“The expenditure to conduct the elections may require Rs 15 crore. We have asked the Deputy Commissioner to revisit the expenditure,” Tynsong said.

“The reason it is an expensive affair is that of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,” he added.

On October 12, 2020, the Meghalaya Cabinet postponed the GHADC elections and imposed Administrator’s rule in the Council.

The Administrator’s Rule, which is for six months, would end in April.
