Meghalaya: Cabbies protest over Centre's announcement to make FASTag stickers mandatory

 |

NONGPOH:

Taxi drivers and owners, under the banner of the Local Taxi Owner and Driver Association, Nongpoh, organised a peaceful protest near the Toll Plaza of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) at Pahammawlein on Saturday.

The protest was against the recent announcement made by the Centre to make FASTag stickers mandatory for all vehicles, private and commercial, for paying toll fees.

"Local taxis of Nongpoh Region are ferrying passengers from Nongpoh to Byrnihat and Jorabat and come back daily with one or two trips a day.

Paying toll fee which had been made mandatory by the central government, will adversely affect drivers who are earning their livelihood through this mode of employment," the president of the Local Taxi Owner and Driver Association, Lucas Maring, said.

Maring stated that proper consideration must be taken by the NHAI and the district administration concerning the FASTag stickers.
