The Meghalaya BJP is planning to contest the upcoming elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) scheduled to be held on April 9.

“Few sitting and former MDCs have already approached me as they wanted to contest as a candidate of the party for the GHADC elections,” Health and Family Welfare Minister and BJP MLA Alexander Laloo Hek told reporters on Friday.

“We will soon meet to discuss the GHADC elections,” he said.

The BJP MLA claimed that the party has huge prospects in the Garo Hills region.

Hek, however, admitted that the voting pattern in Meghalaya is based on personality rather than on party politics.

“People are looking at the personality of the candidates while casting their votes. Therefore, we will look to field candidates who are connected with the people at the grassroot level. We will also look for candidates who have better prospects to win the election while allotting the party ticket,” he said.

“The party campaign for the election would be zero tolerance of corruption,” he added.

Hek also denied that he had endorsed the demand made by state BJP president Ernest Mawrie for Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui to step down.

“It would be wrong to squarely blame the Home Minister for the death of the six coal miners in East Jaiñtia Hills,” Hek said.
