Meghalaya: Ban on plastic to be strictly enforced in Ri Bhoi District

 |

NONGPOH:

Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner R.M Kurbah, on Thursday, issued a notification prohibiting the use of plastic bags in the district.

Kurbah informed that no person, shopkeeper, vendor, wholesaler, retailer, trader, hawker or salesman, shall use plastic carry bags or plastic sheets with a thickness of less than 50 microns.

However, products that have been pre-packed and sealed in plastic bags and multi-layered film/sheets, including plastic bags and sheets used in forestry, horticulture nurseries and medicine, are exempted from the notification.

“Plastic sheets with a thickness of fewer than 50 microns are causing serious environmental hazards and affecting human health and other life forms,” Kurbah said.

The DC also informed that any individual violating the notification would be penalised under Section 15 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
