Meghalaya: Authorities undertake road repairs after meme goes viral on social media

 |

TURA: The people of Tura in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district are famous for their sense of humour, with many taking to their social media accounts to highlight various issues through hilarious memes.

The most recent meme shows the pitiful condition of the roads in Tura. We may note that some of the worst roads are the ones near Hawakhana, Jail Road and Tura Bazaar.

The meme hilariously depicts people taking baths, children playing in puddles, and one person washing clothes near the Members of District Council (MDC) quarters in Hawakhana.

The meme alone was responsible for the repair work that began on the stretch, even on a Sunday on August 16.

While the originator of the post remains unidentified, the meme went viral instantly with hundreds sharing it on their timelines. Users even went to the extent of naming the potholes ‘Hawa Lake’.

Seemingly, the meme had a positive impact on the situation as it resulted in emergency repairs along the damaged portion of the roads.

Several Tura residents posted photos and videos of the repair work on social media, with many considering it a victory for the platform.

However, the success of the Hawakhana meme seems to have been a one-off thing as another meme showing a picture of Bollywood actor Salman Khan sitting in a pothole in front of Jail Road failed to bring out a similar response.

Large portions of another road near Sunny Hills are in the same condition, even though workers repaired it just a few months back. Workers later patched up the damaged portions with concrete.

But the situation in Jail Road is different. Several complaints have, till now, elicited no response from the Public Works Department (PWD) and the area remains amongst the most backwards in terms of infrastructure in the town.

The areas mentioned above all fall under South Tura constituency.

In the bazaar area, huge potholes have developed in many sections, but repairs seem to be the last thing on the minds of the authorities.

Meanwhile, the BJP — Tura region threatened to escalate the matter if authorities failed to repair the potholes around Tura.
