Meghalaya Assembly pays tribute to former president and state leaders

The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, on Thursday, paid tribute to former President Pranab Mukherjee and late state leaders namely Hispreachingson Shylla and Simon Siangshai during the first autumn session.

Thirty-nine political leaders including former union ministers Ram Vilas Paswan, Jaswant Singh and first Chattisgarh chief minister Ajit Pramod Kumar Jogi, passed away in the past few months.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma gave a special mention to the Late Pranab Mukherjee by stating that Mukherjee worked very hard with the subjects he handled.

"He was a great personality,” Sangma said.

Talking about Shylla, Sangma said that Shylla was an individual with exceptional oratory skills.

He also said that Siangshai was a leader who had a strong connection with the people at the grassroots level.

Former Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma, while participating in the obituary reference, termed Shylla and Siangshai as the two great sons of the soil - loved and respected by the people.

Sangma also recalled the special bonding with Mukherjee during the days in the Indian National Congress and stated that he was a leader who was always ready to give guidance when needed.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh said that the deaths of Shylla and Siangshai are a great loss for the people of the State.

"We have also lost a great leader like Mukherjee, who had managed to occupy the highest position in the country by becoming the President," he said.

Others who participated in the obituary reference included P.T. Sawkmie, Zenith M Sangma, George B Lyngdoh and Mayralborn Syiem along with Adelbert Nongrum and Independent MLA Lambor Malngiang.
