Meghalaya Assembly pays tribute to departed leaders on 1st day of Budget Session

The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly paid tribute to Mawryngkneng MLA (L) David Nongrum and Rajabala MLA (L) Azad Zaman on the first day of the Budget Session on Friday, March 5.

The House also remembered the first generation of politicians in Meghalaya - (L) G. Mylliemngap (ex-Home Minister), (L) Edward Kurbah (ex-MLA) and (L) DN Joshi (ex-MLA).

Members of the House also paid tribute to former Chief Minister of Assam and Congress Stalwart, Tarun Gogoi besides other political leaders of the country.

Condoling the demise of David Nongrum and Dr Azad Zaman, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said, "It is a great loss not just for the political party they belong to but to the Assembly and the State as a whole."

Giving special mention to ex-Assam CM Tarun Gogoi, the Chief Minister said Gogoi was a father figure for all of us. "He was a different breed of politician and somebody who would always take up the role of a statesman," he said.

Leader of Opposition Dr Mukul Sangma, while participating in the obituary reference, said, "We have lost several leaders from different parts of the country."

Remembering Nongrum and Zaman, Dr Sangma said, "It is not easy losing a friend. It is difficult to reconcile with the truth, the reality of life but we have to accept the fact."

David Nongrum, an MLA from Mawryngkneng, passed away on February 2, at the age of 42.

Dr Azad Zaman, an MLA from Rajabala, passed away on March 4, at the age of 47.

Former Assam Chief Minister for three consecutive terms and veteran Congress leader, Tarun Gogoi passed away on November 23, at the age of 86.
