Meghalaya: Angry mob attacks tourist cab driver for "abusing" toll staff

 |

NONGPOH:

An angry mob assaulted a tourist cab driver for allegedly making abusive remarks to one toll gate staff member at Pahammawlein in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district on Friday.

According to sources, the driver, Mintu Deb, from Mawbah, Shillong, was on his way to Guwahati in his tourist vehicle (ML 05 L 1345) and allegedly made an abusive remark to the woman concerning the toll fees.

Other staff members rushed to the spot and took him to the office of the toll plaza where they reportedly assaulted him and damaged his car.

However, Byrnihat Police arrived on the scene and were able to put the situation under control.

According to the staff of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) toll plaza, the driver was enraged after he was informed that FASTag stickers are mandatory and they would charge vehicles with no FASTag stickers to double the actual rate.

Recently, a visitor to Meghalaya had posted a video on social media showing an argument between him and a gatekeeper concerning the toll fees at the NHAI toll plaza in Pahammawlein.

The NHAI staff had also filed an FIR at Byrnihat Police Outpost against the erring tourist driver and the visitor who posted the ‘misleading’ information on social media.
