Meghalaya: Anganwadi worker recognised by district for serving beyond the call of duty

Thirty-five-year-old Stella N Marak of Tikrikilla’s Boldampitbari area was awarded by the district of West Garo Hills (WGH) during the recently concluded Republic Day celebrations in Tura for serving beyond the call of duty.

TURA:

Thirty-five-year-old Stella N Marak of Tikrikilla’s Boldampitbari area was awarded by the district of West Garo Hills (WGH) during the recently concluded Republic Day celebrations in Tura for serving beyond the call of duty.

Marak was at the forefront in the fight against COVID-19 ever since the pandemic took the country by storm last year.

“As an Anganwadi worker, we were the first point of contact for those coming from outside the state and being put into quarantine. We assisted all of them and catered to their needs. We even provided food and essentials to those who were under home quarantine by delivering them,” Stella said.

“We bore through some tantrums thrown at us with the understanding that they needed us in their moment of the test. I am happy that we have been able to get through that period,” Stella added.

The mother of two also thanked the residents of Boldam village by stating that they have been extremely helpful.

“The credit for the award I got goes to the people of my village. They have been extremely supportive of my work and have helped all the time,” she added.

Incidentally, this is not the first award she received.

Because of her hard work as an ASHA worker before becoming an Anganwadi worker, she was awarded for her work at the C&RD Block level on two separate occasions.

“Our childhood was difficult, and I had to leave studies in between to help my siblings study. Thankfully, they are doing fine in their own lives now. I am happy with my work as an Anganwadi worker despite the low salary as I have always loved helping people, and the job allows me to do so,” Stella said.
