LS Speaker Om Birla visits Shillong, inspects new Assembly building

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is on a two-day visit to Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya to meet with members of the Legislative Assembly and, to inspect the ongoing construction of the new Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang in New Shillong Township.

Birla, who reached Shillong on Thursday morning, addressed the Members of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly where he touched on topics pertaining to 'Parliamentary Democracy'.

During his speech, the LS Speaker highlighted the political achievements of Late PA Sangma and hailed him for his contribution to the State and the country.

"I feel proud that I am a part of the same institution which PA Sangma served", Birla said.

Shedding light on the working process of democracy, the Speaker said that Indian Democracy is thriving towards greater glory with each passing day.

"India is a perfect example of how a democratic country works", Birla added.

Speaking about the different institutions like the Parliament, the State Assembly, Autonomous District Councils (ADCs), the Speaker requested greater coordination between these entities for better functioning of democracy.

Birla further urged the members of the Assembly to work towards serving the citizens and society.

"Friends, I urge you to work, keeping in mind the constitution. The nation comes first; we have to work together to make our nation strong", Birla said.

He also praised the natural beauty of Meghalaya and urged the government to work towards developing the tourism sector in the State.

Furthermore, Birla appreciated the efforts put by the State Government in handling the Corona crises.

"North-East India will play a pivotal role in India's growth, and the people of the different states must coordinate with the centre to achieve the goal," Birla added.

After the address, Birla visited Mawdiangdiang to inspect the ongoing construction of the new Assembly building.

He was accompanied by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh and other Cabinet Ministers.

The Lok Sabha Speaker will attend a programme at the State Convention Centre, which will be attended by State officials and several members of the Parliament.
