India's longest road arch bridge inaugurated in Meghalaya

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday formally inaugurated the longest road arch bridge in India - the Wahrew Bridge at Sohbar in East Khasi Hills district.

The arch bridge was constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 49.395 crore under the Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources (NLCPR) of the Ministry of Development of North East Region (DoNER).

"Inaugurated the Longest Road Arch Bridge in India, the Wahrew Bridge at Sohbar constructed at ₹49.395 Cr under NLCPR of MDoNER_India, connecting Bholaganj & Sohbar to Nongjri. We dedicate this to the progress of the area & (L) Dr Donkupar Roy (former Speaker)," the CM tweeted.

The project was sanctioned in 2013 and, the work started in 2014. The construction of the bridge was completed in December 2018.

This iconic structure is expected to boost the tourism sector in the State.

Others present on the occasion include Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh, local MLA Balajied Synrem, and senior government officials among others.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister said that this arch bridge is a befitting tribute to former Assembly Speaker and local MLA of Shella constituency, late Dr. Donkupar Roy who was instrumental in getting this project sanctioned. He said that this iconic structure will be a major boost to the tourism sector in the State.
