Cracks within BJP Meghalaya widen

SHILLONG:

Cracks within the BJP in Meghalaya widened with party MLA claiming that the State party president, Ernest Mawrie was elected by way of "manipulation".

BJP MLA from South Shillong, Sanbor Shullai broke his silence on Saturday over the issue revolving the claims made by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on the "internal feelings" of most of the BJP leaders in the state on the style of functioning of Mawrie.

"I was elected as an MLA by the people of South Shillong. But he (Mawrie) was elected as the State party president by way of manipulation," Shullai told reporters.

Shullai expressed anger over the statement made by Mawrie that he along with BJP MLA and Health and Family Welfare Minister, Alexander Laloo Hek should give a joint statement on their wishes to remove Mawrie from the post of president.

"Who is he to ask for a joint statement?" Shullai questioned. He also admitted that the claim of Chief Minister and national president of NPP, Conrad K Sangma that majority of the party leaders wants the removal of Mawrie is true."

Around 75 to 80 percent of the party leaders are in favour that Mawrie should be removed from the president's post," the BJP MLA from South Shillong claimed.

Shullai also alleged that soon after Mawrie took charge of the party in Meghalaya, many party leaders from Ri-Bhoi, Jaintia Hills, West Khasi Hills and Shillong City have resigned in protest against the functioning of Mawrie.

Shullai also said that the party leaders of the Meghalaya had informed about the issue to the national vice president in-charge of Meghalaya, Dr. M. Chuba Ao.

According to him, he (Dr. Ao) told them the complaint should be in writing and not verbally, before he can take it up with the central leaders.

On the statement made by Mawrie that the NPP cannot interfere in the internal affairs of the BJP, Shullai said that he (Conrad) has the right to make the statement because, since the beginning, the central leaders of the BJP had given them the green signal to support the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government under the leadership of Sangma.
