SHILLONG | March 11, 2019:

The coalition partners of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) excluding BJP on Monday unanimously finalised the name of UDP leader — Dr Jemino Mawthoh as the 'common candidate' for Shillong Parliamentary seat.

Informing this, UDP president Dr Donkupar Roy said that in today's meeting of the MDA partners and parties' presidents including independent MLA, it was decided that Mawthoh will contest the Lok Sabha polls on UDP symbol.

The UDP president also informed that while a UDP symbol will be used for Shillong, in Tura, an NPP candidate will contest the LS polls on their party symbol.

"From today we are preparing on how to fight the elections and we are determined that we will win both Shillong and Tura," Dr Don said.

Meanwhile, for Tura, the MDA's common candidate is yet to be announced though reports are doing the rounds that former Tura MP, Agatha Sangma will be contesting on NPP symbol.

When asked if Agatha Sangma is the MDA's common candidate for Tura, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that the NPP will decide and announce it at a later date.

"The name of the NPP candidate for Tura will be announced following a party meeting which will be held soon," said state party president W Kharlukhi.

It may be mentioned that amongst the MDA partners, the BJP has decided to go solo in this elections.

When asked whether the common candidates are ready to face a tough competitor like the Congress, Dr Don replied in the affirmative.

"We are 100 percent sure that we will win. We have many MLAs, MDCs and supporters," said the UDP president.

He also stated that with the recent conclusion of the MDC elections, the people of the state are still in the election mood and "what is left now is to bring them back together," added Dr Don.
